Rudolf Bultmann was one of the few independent thinkers in Protestant theology in the 20th century. He exhibited great skill in combining historical reconstruction with a topical interpretation of the New Testament, and tried to overcome the crisis of historicism with the hermeneutic concept of existential interpretation.
