RGG⁴ Handwörterbuch für Theologie und Religionswissenschaft
Herausgegeben von Hans D. Betz, Don S. Browning, Bernd Janowski und Eberhard Jüngel.
In 15.665 articles and subarticles, the RGG⁴ provides an in-depth overview of religion and religions, encompassing a vast range of subjects. Taking into account the latest research developments, it provides entries by 3972 acknowledged experts in their fields from 74 countries.
The RGG⁴ continues in the tradition of the first three editions: Rooted in Protestantism, it provides insights into much more than theology, but is based on theological criteria.
The RGG⁴ deals with the topics in the form of biographical articles, articles on countries, places, terms and events as well as articles on groups and institutions. Short definitions and cross-references enable quick and easy searching. Detailed series articles deal with keywords such as the "Last Supper" or "Christianity" from various perspectives.
With its coverage of a wide range of subjects and its precise, detailed descriptions, the RGG⁴ is an essential reference work for all levels of users. Its easy-to-read typeface enables it to provide a maximum amount of information on one page.
Each of the eight volumes of the RGG⁴ covers entire letters of the alphabet. The index volume, which completes the work, enables the reader to access the information contained in the RGG⁴ by searching for more specific topics, such as for example names and keywords which do not have a main entry. The RGG⁴ has of course been printed on non-aging paper, has been thread sewn and clothbound in buckram.
The RGG⁴ was awarded a prize by the Stiftung Buchkunst (German Foundation for Book Art) as "one of the best designed books of 1998. Exemplary in typesetting, printing, graphic design and binding."
