Seele nach der Aufklärung

Studien zu Herder und Harnack

[The Soul after the Enlightenment. Studies of Herder and Harnack.]

Published in German.

In everyday language, the concept of soul has not lost its plausibility, and has also retained its significance in literature or as an expression of piety. It has however lost its significance in the modern age for the scholarly description of mankind. Based on this fact, Roderich Barth deals with two epochs which are relevant for the history of this problem. Herder's studies of the widespread discussions on the soul during the Enlightenment illustrate clearly the beginning of a profound crisis in this leading anthropological paradigm and are a ground-breaking attempt to find a suitable reformulation of the concept of soul. Harnack on the other hand recognized the significance of the concept of soul for the cultural self-conception in the scientistic-ideological situation at the end of the 19th century and thus made this the focal point in his historiographical theory of Christianity. The study closes with a systematic explanation of the phenomenon which this concept is genuinely able to express in relation to other anthropological guiding paradigms of the modern era.
