Thomas K KuhnReligion und neuzeitliche GesellschaftStudien zum sozialen und diakonischen Handeln in Pietismus, Aufklärung und Erweckungsbewegung [Religion and Modern Society. Studies of Social Welfare Work in Pietism, the Enlightenment and the Awakening.]Published in German. Thomas K. Kuhn deals with the basic questions of modern Christian religiousness from the perspective of social welfare work. He begins with a study of August Hermann Francke, using an analysis of his sermons on poverty to put his involvement in caring for the poor into a larger theological context, a context on which the history of salvation had a formative influence. The second part of the book focuses on the pastoral education of the people, in which the substantial contribution of clergymen to the propagation, elementarization and educationalization of the Enlightenment as well as their interest in reforms in the church and religion can be seen. The author concludes with an analysis of the theory and practice of the education of the poor, which was influenced by millenarianism, using Christian Heinrich Zeller and his rescue house in Beuggen as an example. It was in this house that a separate, authoritarian milieu evolved in the context of the Basel Awakening.
