Karl von Hase als Kirchenhistoriker

[Karl von Hase as a Church Historian.]

Published in German.

Karl von Hase (1800-1890) was one of the most influential church historians of his time, and his liberal-Protestant church historiography had a lasting impact, not only on academic theology. Taking into account previously unknown sources, Magdalena Herbst presents a comprehensive study of his complete works. In doing so, she connects various approaches, such as biographical investigations, analyses of the theological and philosophical basis for his concept, the reconstruction of Hase’s scholarly controversies as well as observations of how his works were received. In the development of Protestant church historiography since the 18th century, Hase’s achievement consisted of overcoming rationalistic, pragmatic church historiography by using an independent concept which centered on his theory of Protestantism.
