[Jesus and the Tax Issue. The Tribute Money Pericope against the Religious and Political Backdrop of Its Era with an Edition of Pseudo-Hieronymus, De haeresibus Judaeorum .]

Published in German.

After Judas of Galilee’s revolt in 6 AD, the Jewish-Roman conflict became manifest in the rejection of the Roman tax demands. In this context, Niclas Förster gives historically substantiated suggestions for a political reading of New Testament texts in this study of Jesus’s answer to the tax issue. He contextualizes the synoptic Tribute Money Pericope in the historical and political environment of its time. In his interpretation, he breaks new exegetical ground in using previously disregarded source material. Niclas Förster draws on archeological evidence such as coin and papyrus findings, previously little-explored Qumran texts as well as a new patristic source (with a scholarly first edition), which among other things sheds light on the coin boycott by Jewish insurgents. In addition, the author examines the reception history of the tribute money phrase from the possible adaptation in Romans 13:6-7 as well as the Gospel of Thomas and P. Egerton 2.
