This reprint of The Formation of the Christian Bible is being published in honor of Hans von Campenhausen, one of the most important specialists in ancient Christianity in the 20th century, who would have turned 100 on December 3, 2003. The book describes the formation of the idea of a Christian Bible from its origins with Jesus of Nazareth up to the beginning of the fourth century. The author has written a history of ideas in the Bible in the first two centuries and for this purpose has given a detailed analysis of the relevant texts. An afterword by Christoph Markschies, von Campenhausen's successor in Heidelberg, informs the reader about the research done since the book was published and also about the historical background of this classic work.
