This comprehensive work deals with the meaning and function of the central topic of the "face of YHWH" in the Psalms against the background of Ancient Near Eastern textual and iconographic sources. The primary interest of the study is to reconstruct the conception of the "face of YHWH" as part of the symbolism of the temple of Jerusalem. The main thesis is that the social model of an audience before the ruler provides the source for the 'legibility' of the language of the "face of YHWH" in the Psalms.
