In its four sections, Claus Dieter Classen deals with basic questions (What is religion? How is the relationship between the state and religion in general?), issues concerning individual religious freedom, the right to self-determination of religious communities as well as the cooperation between the state and religious communities (religious instruction, divinity faculties, spiritual welfare in institutions). The author also addresses specific problems such as the headscarf debate and kosher butchering. He focuses in particular on the necessity of regarding state law as religiously neutral and also receptive to non-Christian religious communities.
