This second, considerably expanded edition of the Grundgesetz-Kommentar (Commentary on the German Basic Law) has been revised extensively and completely updated. The structure has been retained, and is applied consistently to each article. Thus the commentary continues to focus on the sources and the origins of the German Basic Law as well as its integration into international,  supranational and comparative law backgrounds. It also contains a particularly clear analysis of the Europeanization of constitutional law.

In the interest of increased user-friendliness, the relevant keywords are listed at the beginning of each article in addition to the literature and the landmark decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court.

The federalism reform in 2006, one of the most comprehensive amendments to the constitution up to now, has been included in detail in a supplement to Volume II containing addenda or new commentaries and in the relevant commentaries in Volume III.
