(Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg), 1973 Habilitation in Jewish Studies (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University of Frankfurt). 1982-83 Professor for Jewish Studies at the University of Köln, 1984-2008 Professor of Jewish Studies at the FU Berlin, since 1998 Perelman Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Religion at Princeton University. 1994 Leibniz Prize, 2006 Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award; Honorary degrees from the Universities of Utrecht and Tel Aviv. 2013 Howard T. Behrman Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Humanities. Since 2008 Professor emeritus. Since 2014 director of the Jewish Museum Berlin.
