“The perception of Rome” has two facets: painted or remembered images of a city and at the same time linguistic images and metaphors. This volume describes how a real encounter with the city of Rome developed into a cultural perception of Rome as shown in theology, in intellectual life and in the artistic life of Protestantism. The period studied begins in the late 18th century, since it was at this time that the real encounter with Rome became more important, and ends with the years surrounding the First World War, which was a significant turning point. The emerging cultural interactions are examined in various fields by a wide range of different experts, mainly in the areas of art, literature, science and theology.
