Thomas KaufmannLuthers "Judenschriften"Ein Beitrag zu ihrer historischen Kontextualisierung [Luther’s “Writings on the Jews”. A Contribution to Their Historical Contextualization.]Published in German. Thomas Kaufmann describes Luther’s “writings on the Jews” in the setting of the dramatically changing historical contexts of the Reformation and in the context of contemporary debates. Whereas the struggle against the papal church remained paramount in the 1520s, in relation to the attitude toward the Jews as well, it was the challenges resulting from the development of a Protestant church system which had dominated since the 1530s. The analysis of the occasions for Luther’s writings shows that the reformer intentionally exposed the Jews to the dangerous allegation of proselytism and struggled against a Christian doctrine of the Hebrew language which did not share his Christological interpretation of key texts in the Old Testament. In conclusion, the author outlines the history of reception of the “writings on the Jews” up to the 20th century.
